St. James Parish Council operates finance, administration and planning departments. It maintains the Disaster Information Database Center, which is responsible for the management of shelters and resources for disaster control operations. The council s poor relief department provides nutrition, medical care and transportation services, as well as financial assistance. St. James Parish Council also issues building permits for residential and commercial structures, including bars, clubs, video arcades, concert halls and theaters. The council is responsible for cleaning and maintaining drains and gullies. It provides supervision and maintenance services for abattoirs, cemeteries, standpipe systems, wayside tanks and tributaries. In addition, St. James Parish Council is responsible for the maintenance of traffic signs and lights.
