Founded in 1979, Feeding America is a nonprofit organization that serves low-income individuals and families. It is one of the leading domestic hunger-relief charities in the United States that serves more than 9 million children and over 3 million senior citizens each year. The organization operates through a network of nearly 200 member food banks and food-rescue organizations. Feeding America distributes a range of donated food and grocery products annually. It supports various local charitable agencies that operate approximately 70,000 food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and after-school programs. In addition, the organization provides food distribution programs during natural disasters. Feeding America also conducts studies that offer information on the demographic profiles of emergency food clients and the nature and efficacy of local agencies in meeting their food security needs.
