After living in the Atlas Loft...

After living in the Atlas Lofts for the better part of a year, I honestly can not recommend the property to anyone. There have been extremely few pros and an immense list of cons.

I will itemize this list via bullets, and I urge anyone who is contemplating signing a lease here or at the apartments currently being constructed on Gerrish Avenue to read this review in full.

CONS:

1.) When we signed a lease, we were told that this was a property staffed with an office representative during the weekdays, essentially someone who would be available to sign for packages, answer concerns, etc. Within the first month of moving in, this had been changed to an office representative on the premises three days a week; however, that is not always the case. More than ten times in the time we have been here, a note has been placed in the window saying “Sorry, there will be no office representative today” even though it is a day with clearly posted office hours. Thus, we have had packages returned, been unable to reach a manager for apartment concerns, etc.

2.) We chose this place because it allows dogs, but a number of the tenants are disrespectful concerning the lawn behind the building. Many of them do not pick up after their pets, leaving the grass strewn with poop. It is not only unsightly, but we’ve each stepped in more than one pile during our time here.

3.) The fitness room was also a big plus for us, but the three cardio machines they have are constantly broken.

4.) As there are a number of seedy characters who wander the streets at night, and there have even been incidents of random people trying to open the doors of cars, we opted for garage parking. This parking, which is supposed to be restricted to the general public, and goes for an additional $75 per month, is completely ineffective because the automatic garage door is frequently broken and therefore left open. In the past we have encountered kids smoking pot in there. Some of them even tried intimidating my wife, calling her a “cracker.”

5.) As I hinted in #4, the area does not feel safe. I am not comfortable allowing my wife to go out alone. When she has gone out to run (because the exercise equipment was broken), she has been harassed by the Latino men in the area, who whistled at her and called her demeaning names. Since we have lived here the building itself has been spray-painted, we have had to call the police due to people abusing drugs in the lawn behind the building (the same one littered with poop), and last month the police even had to be called due to a violent dispute between two of the tenants who live in the building!

6.) While the surrounding area is not safe, it is also just plain gross. If you want to walk or run anywhere, you will find that it is not a pleasant experience. A lot of the low-class residents and first-generation immigrants who live in the neighborhood allow their dogs to crap on the sidewalks and don’t clean it up. They also throw all types of trash on the ground and sidewalks. I have seen both needles and condoms on the ground in the area.

Okay, so now for the pros:

1.) The lofts are pretty nice on the inside. The amenities are new and the living space is more than sufficient.

2.) The building is new and we have not noticed any issues with insect pests, mice ,etc.

3.) It is cheap compared to Boston/Cambridge/Brookline standards, but I implore you to carefully consider how much saving a few extra dollars per month means to you. In my estimation it is not worth the trade-off.

4.) The current manager is genuinely a nice person, but as stated before, seems unable to get the right people on board to address the numerous negative aspects of the property. Everything points to this being an issue with the greater management scheme or the property owners, not the current on-site manager.
