A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Gary graduated from Chattanooga Central High School and attended college at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. After graduating from the University of the South, Gary obtained a law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he served as a student attorney in the U.T. Legal Clinic and as Third-Year Editor of the Tennessee Law Review.
