The staff at Starlite literally saved my life. Was fearful at first, but the staff (in 2014) were mostly HAPPILY RECOVERED people. Not that their lives were perfect, but happily recovered. They were LIVING HAPPY RECOVERY. I wanted what they had. I didn't think that at first, that they could teach me anything, but I saw living, walking around, breathing proof that happy recovery is possible. I was bad shape when I got there, but they were an inspiration to me. Unfortunately, we addicts and alcoholics, have to get in pretty bad shape to work on OUR recovery. Our moms, dads, employers or who ever can't do it for us. And at first it was work, but after the 30 days at Starlite, and the aftercare that I asked for and sought and DID, I am happily recovered going on 2 years. They hooked me up with a group in SA where there are positive people that are 20+ years clean and sober. Not a "Country Club" rehab place. But recovery is there. I am proof.

I've seen other reviews online and I don't understand what some of the negative ones are about. When I came to Starlight, I was dying from addiction. No - its not a fancy place but I didn't come to Starlight for a vacation. I came to treatment because I wanted to live. Even though its an older facility, its beautiful and peaceful. All of the staff were extremely careing. My counselor listened to me and helped me work thru alot. When I called to find out about the place, the lady in admissions was awesome. She was very patient and even called me back just to check on me and see if I had any questions from the first time I called because I was really messed up the first time I called. Nobody ever tried to give me a sales pitch. They told me exactly what I needed to do and I am so happy they did. Because I didn't know what to do. Starlight is exactly what I needed. I am grateful for my new life.

It sounds like people are looking for a fancy resort place like you see advertised on late night TV. If you want to go to a fancy place to relax for a month you should spend your money on a vacation. After you get back and realize that your life is still awful because of drugs and alcohol, call Starlight if you want a real chance at life.

It's painfully obvious that when somebody has a negative review of Starlite they are still in the grips of addiction and alcoholism. I hope they find the love and freedom that sobriety brings and they enjoy a long healthy life.

I was given the run around, ignored and lied to. First of all, my son was admitted for a 45 day program, but only stayed 30 days. I was quoted an original private pay price of 18,600 but they encouraged the 45 day program to the tune of 24,750. After my son left, they agreed I was due a refund, told me it would be "less" because he "broke the contract" (they refuse to show me where it says that) and that the refund would be 6000.

When only half that was refunded, I called to see what happened, and after about five calls and a week, was told different things by different people, kept getting transferred, and no one could keep their story straight or even say the same thing twice. At one point I was told they never got my messages but a few minutes later said they got the messages but needed to transfer it to someone else who could handle it. I just wanted the refund I was originally told I was going to get. I was promised a call from the "supervisor", no name given, that same day.

I never received any other call. I live two hours away and have a son at home, still working on his recovery, so I don't want to drive down there to be told they are "in a meeting" which is another excuse I've heard when trying to reach them.

As for the recovery part, since I'm obviously unimpressed with their business side of things, my son left early because he felt he got all he could out of it. He was bored, as many of the great things they tell you about and show you on the website never materialized. The place was pretty rundown. At one point when I visited, the front door to their cabin was completely broken and had to be locked shut, unusable. The boys were then moved because of construction.

I never once received a call from his counselor, though I left messages asking for a call back, and was told in the beginning to call any time.

Not one single person ever called to check on my son after he left, or offer any kind of outpatient care or advise. I was astounded and hurt by the lack of compassion for my son. Even though he left early, he was a paying client and we were told repeatedly about the amazing aftercare. But there was none.

Starlite was my 7th and last rehab center. I flew all the way from Indiana to get help. I had struggled on & off for 10 years and battled PTSD from many deployments and in starlite I finally got it. The best part of starlight is the education I received, I learned about my brain and how the chemistry can change! Also the education my husband received. I am currently back in college working towards degree is neuroscience with a 4.0 gpa. I was literally on my death bed with record breaking BAC and several seizures? I will always hold starlite and the staff close to my heart! I have one hell of a testimony that I will share someday

Disappointing

We have been really disappointed in the treatment my husband received at Starlight. He did his detox at hospital because he was in such bad shape when he went down there. Then he returned to Starlight for 21 days. We chose Starlight because they said they offered intensive treatment for people who had relapsed and offered follow up treatment. He did not receive any specific relapse counseling. There has been no follow-up contact at all. And he's been home almost a month and a half. They didn't even check to make sure he made it home safely. He only received one individual counseling session. Most of that was spent answering questions while his counselor typed in his responses. We sent him all the way from Oklahoma because we thought he would get treatment designed to meet his needs even though he would only be there for 21 days. What we got in reality was pretty much a waste of our insurance company's money and our time and co-pay. The staff seemed very nice and the facility was ok,but the treatment itself was lacking. I will definitely be contacting my insurance company to let them know that they wasted a lot of money.

Thank you for giving us our life back! James went on the men’s Walk to Emmaus in March which he never would do before because he could not stop drinking. He is wonderful. We go places again when our lives used to be scheduled around the bottle. We laugh like we are newlyweds.

Before his visit to Starlite, James would drink 4 gallons of whiskey and a bottle of pills in 4 days. I never left him alone for fear of finding him dead. Now, I can go visit the family and not worry anymore. I have the sweet angel of a man back that I married. Thanks again to you and God. I don’t know where we would be without you. We almost lost everything we had, his job of 28 years; our home of 20 years, besides our life together was also in jeopardy. Not because of less love, just too much heart break and denial. I was alone all the time even though he was here.

Classes tend to be a little boring but they do help you learn a lot! Employees here are very nice and helpful. Cafeteria food is not very good. Suggest you bring money and other from home but no refrigerator.

Amazing community, counselor and a beautiful campus in the hill country. I’ve been to several treatment centers and this center has given me the most humbling, and amazing experience.

The people and counseling staff brought life back into my soul and taught me that although this disease is grave, I can be of service by helping others sober everywhere I go with the tools given to me at Starlite.

I gratefully and gladly attend 6 to 8 AA Meetings per week. I am of service to those who suffer and I work with other alcoholics. I am living in Des Moines now and I am further blessed to be near one of my daughters and to have a relationship with her that I dared not dream possible and I know could not be if I were not sober. She and her husband will have their first child (my first grandchild) in October.

I am forever grateful to each and every person at Starlight. Each and every person. I remember every single one of you and I could detail specifics for each and every individual staff member and how their care and actions touched me and helped me in my recovery.

Every time I see a square Frisbee, I think of Star and how her presence there was so healing to so many.
