I moved back to Georgia, specifically Cartersville, after thirteen years away and found myself in need of a family doctor. I remembered Dr. Bevill from before and sought to make an appointment for a rather urgent matter, but right from the beginning had issues.

The person who made my appointment was very abrupt and seemed less interested in answering my questions than chatting with whomever was in front of her. I was given an appointment time but my other requests for information were answered hurriedly and vaguely, and she didn't even say goodbye before hanging up. I was surprised as I didn't remember Dr. Bevill's office staff being so rude, but I went ahead and reported for my appointment the next morning.

I was there for more than thirty minutes past my appointment time before I was told they wouldn't see me. In the years since I'd last lived in Cartersville I'd seen several physicians in three different states, most while I was uninsured and self-pay, and had NEVER gotten the runaround that this office gave me because I didn't have $140 up front as a "deposit." I'd brought $65 in cash because that was the most I'd ever been asked to pay for an office visit by anyone, and left my credit card with my husband for the day. One of the questions I'd asked the day before was "So the office visit is like $50 or something, right?" and that question, like a couple of others, had been totally waved off while the person spoke to people around her and only half paid attention to setting my appointment, so I assumed I was in the ballpark and prepared accordingly. Upon arrival I was made to feel bad because I was uninsured and was told an office visit is $140 and pretty much nonnegotiable. I explained my current situation (self pay because I'd just lost my insurance and had taken a new job) and explained how my husband had my card and asked could they call him to take the payment or could I have him call them and was given a resounding "NO"...although I'd had to pay over the phone at least six times with everyone from my former GP to the Imaging Center to the hospital ER and never before had a problem. They said they'd see me if I could come up with $74 to cover the visit and the basic labs up front, but since I had only $65 that was out unless they'd do what pretty much every medical provider I've had in the past decade does and take a card over the phone...which, of course, they refused to do.

They did not tell me at the time I made the appointment that I would be expected to pay $140 up front as a new uninsured patient. The girl at the front desk wouldn't answer my question about whether their labs were done in house or not, either, because I made the point of saying if the labs were taken off I could pay for the office visit, get a requisition, and have the labs done elsewhere when I had the money. She became very irritable and truthfully treated me as if I were dishonest and trying to bilk the providers out of their money, which I most certainly was not. I was, in fact, trying to find ways to pay them!

I also have to say that this particular girl (very short blond hair, sour expression) was remarkably rude. She had a very superior attitude and was amazingly impolite, and had no problem carrying on loud, inappropriate conversations with her coworkers. There is absolutely no way I'd ever hire her to deal with the public. I have to wonder exactly how she got the job.

I should've been forewarned when the one clear piece of information I was given over the phone was "we need to know EXACTLY which insurance provider you have because we don't accept them all." Their focus on insurance and their ill treatment of the uninsured says pretty much everything you need to know about this practice.
