COMPLETE LACK OF SECURITY AND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

I rented a storage unit from My Storage LLC to store the majority of my belongings when I was in the process of moving. Due to their extremely limited office hours, I was left one key to the lock they provided, and the other was retained by their office.

When I moved my belongings out of the unit, I noticed about $2000 worth of missing items, including a guitar, 3D printer, camping equipment, and a laptop computer, with no signs of a break in. When I initially contacted them regarding this, they told me it was the first they were hearing of it, and would have the owner contacted me. 30 minutes later I received an email from My Storage LLC, saying their policy was changing and customers would now be in charge of providing their own locks, and I subsequently filed a police report.

After hearing nothing from My Storage LLC, I contacted them again, and spoke with the owner. He verified that there had been thefts from several of their units, none with any sign of forced entry. I was told they believed it was possibly done by a construction crew, who had been onsite to build new storage units, and that they would be questioning the crew upon their return to Bozeman.

Again after hearing nothing from My Storage LLC, I called to follow up, and was told that there was nothing more that could be done about the situation, and they would not be held responsible due to the following lines in the Rental Agreement:

LESSEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INSURING THE CONTENTS OF HIS OR HER STORAGE UNIT. Lessor is not responsible for lessee’s property. Lessor’s insurance does not cover lessee’s property.

Lessee will indemnify and hold lessor harmless for any claims of damages resulting from lessee’s use of the storage unit.

Your property is your responsibility-obtaining insurance to cover your property while it is in storage is your responsibility.

Over 20 phone calls and voicemails later, I have been unable to speak to the owner again, either being told he is out of town or unavailable, or more recently, simply getting no answer when I call.

The completely unprofessional way in which this was handled leaves me thoroughly unimpressed with My Storage LLC’s capabilities as a business. Their website plays up the fact that their units are accessible 24/7, and without security cameras, a front gate, or working locks, they are. By anyone.
