I received a voicemail from "Stolen P" late one evening claiming that my young son (8 years old) stole his cell phone. "Stolen P" left no contact information and blocked his number from being visible to caller id, therefore making it impossible to contact him. In the voicemail, he threatened my small children and suggested that if I knew what was good for my family, I would meet him immediately to return the phone I allegedly had in my possession. He also contacted a member of my wife's family and demanded that she give him information about my whereabouts. He provided her with no contact information to pass along to me.
I immediately contacted the police who came to my house and listened to the voicemail. They reassured me that there was no record of the police report "Stolen P" claims he filed relating to this incident. The officer stated that the carrier would be able to ping the location of the stolen phone and that if it was in our possession, the police would have already visited our home. Because of this, he felt it was a scam and told us not to worry.
While the situation is unfortunate, it is either a case of mistaken identity, libel, or a scam. "Stolen P", please feel free to contact me regarding your claim and leave contact information this time so that we can clarify your claim.
