I do not like how pushy gym sales people can be and this gym allowed me to make my own decisions which was great. For the amount of things this gym offers, it is really reasonable in pricing. Where else am I going to find a pool, aerobics classes, free weights and machines for this rate? Nowhere. The facility is really clean.

After 2 years with the same 24 hour gym, I found myself searching for a new one ad the owner closed the doors. After months of dread thinking about having to check out the local fitness center, I walked through their doors. Immediately I was hit in the face by an obnoxious odor. But I did not turn aroud, I stepped further in to speak with the guy at the desk. I told him my story...that I was looking to pay someone money so I could get back in a gym. He basically handed me a sheet of paper with the prices and told me to do a self guided tour!!! Talk about customer service. I don't even think I walked 50 feet before I turned around. I headed back to the desk and he and another worker were over in the corner talking--personal. I had to interrupt to let him know I was finished. He never asked if I had questions or thanked me for coming in. WOW! I was ready to throw the piece of paper in their trashcan...but ran to my car to review the hours and pricing sheet where I could get fresh air. I reviewed the prices and in addition to being 20 a month over my old gym, there was a $99 membership fee and I mush have the fees automatically deducted from my bank account. Not gonna happen. Then I reviewed the hours and realized that I may have to drive to Blue Ridge and check out BodyPlex. I need a 24 hour gym with a smell. It seems if the hospital runs the gym now there should be some type of deodorizer like the hospital citrus aerosol that they can use to diffuse the smell. What a let down!

I gave Union General Wellness Centre a try for a change when my membership at my old gym expired. UGWC's fees are $65 per month and $45 per month if you buy annual membership. My work-outs usually include aerobic classes, weight training, & cardio. This gym offers a wide variety of activities and classes for gyms I've attended in the area however the equipment and interior are well used and in need of updating. The staff is mediocre. I don't desire much interaction with staff and while I enjoyed a couple of my aerobics/yoga instructors very much (Suzanne especially), overall I found the instructors and staff at UGWC distant and a bit self-indulgent. The cardio and weight equipment is old but functions. There's very little in the way of entertainment-music/video. Just 4 tvs all facing same direction in cardio area with no way to use earphones to hear audio on them you have to read the closed caption. I'd give the UGWC a C- for cleanliness but the interior is old and worn and its hard to make it look clean. Then there was how the staff kept insisting, not in a polite way, that I allow them to take my picture? The reason(s) they wanted my picture was never explained to me??? and they always picked the worse times to confront me about these pictures, like every time I came in the door hurrying to get to a class on time. :(!! The best thing at UGWC was the salt water pool. It was wonderful! If I did a lot of swimming that pool might have been able to convince me to join at UGWC despite all the other issues. I'm glad I tried UGWC. It could use some sprucing up but it was ok. It did make me appreciate my old gym more. If I could give UGWC 2.5 stars I would but because of the icky atmosphere there I can't give it 3 stars so I had to rate it 2 stars.
