I was born and raised in Syracuse, New York where I graduated high school in 1968 and attended college where I played baseball. I was drafted into the US Army on December 4th, 1970 and completed my basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey in February 1971. I was assigned to Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado where I completed my specialist training in July 1971 as an optician and optometric technician. I completed my active duty assigned to the eye clinic at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in September of 1972. It was here that I had the opportunity to work with five optometrists from the University of Houston's College of Optometry, who encouraged me to pursue a career in optometry after my tour of duty.
