For now I have to rate 1 Star, but I am willing to reassess if the issue I ran into today is properly addressed.
My 7 year old daughter went in for her first optometry visit and was turned away due to the fact that I couldn't provide a photocopy of my Military I.d. I say I "could not" opposed to "would not", as a recent law provides military should not allow or be forced to make photocopies of their IDs. I called ahead of time and the office manager said it wouldn't be an issue, but then changed positions when we arrived. When speaking with the eye doctor, I explained that tricare (the insurance company) has an outdated handbook which says they are allowed to make copies of IDs, however it is not required. The doctor insisted that even though he IS NOT required to make a copy, he maintains his office policy mandating it because for now, the outdated handbook says he can.
Attempting to resolve the issue, as I was hoping my daughter wouldn't have to wait longer, I called tricare, got a supervisor on the line who verified to the doc on speakerphone, that even though the outdated handbook, for now, still says he can make a photocopy, that by no means is it required for tricare to verify coverage and pay them for their services.
Tricare stated that all their office needs to do is look at my ID, verify/write down my benefits #/DOD ID # (which replaced SSNs for security) and submit that info and that would take care if it, a photocopy is not required. We were still sent away without an exam for my little one.
Removing SSNs from IDs and doing away with photocopies came to protect the identities of Americas troops.
Tricare sent an email to his tricare rep for their office on the issue, and I can only imagine that other Docs will understand the issue, accept tricares explanation that they will still get paid as usual without a photocopy of a military ID, which is not required (which troops are not required to provide), and happily accept the business/new customer.

My wife and I have gone annually to this establishment for 5+ years. Dr. Shanks is a thorough and competent professional taking time to discuss any eye conditions and problems you have. He sends a note to your Physician about your exam findings. The staff if courteous, helpful, and their bright smiles make our day. The make any necessary frame adjustments when needed and file all insurance claims, We highly recommend them.
