Northeastern Mental Health Center, a state Accredited Community Mental Health Center, has been serving Northeastern South Dakota since 1958. The center was started by the efforts of local citizens including Francis "Peg" Lamont. Coffee and Donut fundraisers were used to raise awareness of the need to provide local, quality mental health services. These efforts led to the establishment of the Brown County Mental Health Association in 1955. Northeastern Mental Health Center officially opened in 1958, with a staff of four, including a psychiatrist, psychologist and two support staff. Today, Northeastern Mental Health Center serves a 10 county geographic area of roughly, 11,000 square mile with a population of approximately 70,000. The center provides mental health services to around 2,100 individuals annually. The center offers a wide range of therapeutic services for individuals, couples, families, adults, children and adolescents. Northeastern Mental Heath Center employs a dedicated treatment and support staff of 74. Mission Statement Northeastern Mental Health Center, a community based, family responsive behavioral health resource, enriches the lives of individuals and families and seeks to improve communities through provision of excellent, efficient and effective therapeutic and preventive services designed to create the context for constructive behavior change and engender success in interpersonal and social relationships. Accreditation Information The Northeastern Mental Health Center is a community based mental health center accredited by the state of South Dakota and a member of the South Dakota Council of Mental Health Centers as well as the National Council for Community Behavioral Health care.
