Welcome to Animal City Animal City is a family owned business that has been serving Connecticut for over 70 years. Since conception in 1933, Animal City has been involved in the freshwater tropical fish trade. Animal City was originally known as Hartford Aquarium and was strictly a tropical fish store. Over the years the business evolved into a full line pet store providing a vast variety of domestic and exotic pets, products, and knowledge. Located in Vernon, Connecticut since 1984, Animal City provides everything from the traditional hamster or goldfish to something more exotic like a sugar glider or discus. The store offers an unparalleled selection of unique tropical freshwater fish and goldfish from all over the world, filling over 150 aquariums for your selection. Most animals are locally bred and raised, thus are not subject to various diseases commonly spread amongst commercial sources. Animal City strives to provide beyond exceptional customer service with a knowledgeable and friendly staff. The owner, Lester, is usually on the premises and has over forty years of experience to draw on for answering questions. Please make use of our website and/or our retail store for all of your pet's needs.

This is a great company that has always given me great service. They have a very knowledgeable staff and they have always wanted what was best for the animals. Also when I first went in to the shop I was concerned with the size of the tanks. Then I realized how fast animals move in that store. After I realized this I noticed that this store is run with quality service that is hard to find in pet stores. And they have proper sized tanks for the things that do take a little longer to move. Overall a great experience and would recommend to animal lovers and especially fish lovers.

I have been going there for 10 plus years. Reptiles has been a hobby of mine for 25 years. The owner and his staff are very knowledgeable of the animals and products they sell. I am a firm believer in supporting local small businesses, I get personalized service and pay about the same as the big box stores.

This place was very helpful when it came to selling something.....BUT.... When there was a problem with what we bought they wld not help pay vet bills.

My boyfriend and I spent $500.00 on a conure from this pet store. ( including cage and food) we where told that the bird was "disabled " cause it had two toes missing.. That did not bother us... What bothered us was two weeks after bringing our parrot home I discovered that one of his other toes was swollen and almost ready to explode off his foot. So I rushed him to the vet and $500.00 later had the have the toe amputated !!!! Not willing to give the parrot back to the pet store cause we already made a strong bond. The pet store said they wld not cover any of the vet bill..... Never again will I step foot in the place..

I bought a small snail here for $4.00. The snail died within 2 weeks. I went back to the store for a repacement and the person at the register told me they are only garrenteed for 3 days. This snail cost more than a dollar a day. You would think that they would have replaced it as a nice thing to do, but no, hell with the customer! I will NEVER go back and will tell everyone I know that has pets how they treat their customers! They don't care

I am a animal lover and I planned on going to school for vet tech though I am not a expert I have a sense when something is not right. I recently went to animal city in Vernon,Ct. There were parasites in with the fish in many of the tanks. They had a 10-15 gallon aquarium that housed about four adult rats and two babies. They were housed both male and female together. There were two aquariums side by side and in each one the rats were lathargic and struggling to breath. On of the younger rats were missing her eyes. I don't think that this is how a pet shop should be run.
