The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is a nonprofit organization, established in 1897 by people dedicated to animal welfare. This tradition is carried on today by our devoted staff, compassionate volunteers, and generous donors. We are proud to be the only full service shelter in our community accepting every animal brought to us. Over the past five years we have sheltered more than 60,000 homeless and abused animals. By working in collaboration with local veterinarians, animal rescue groups, businesses and our community members, your Humane Society is dedicated to finding a loving home for all the animals we serve.

As a longtime FORMER volunteer...

As a longtime FORMER volunteer, let me say this isn't a place you want to see any animal have to stay. It's backward, poorly managed, with horrible animal care and dysfunctional leadership -- poor communication, lots of conflicts, little respect for animal care staff. Strays get stuck in cages for over a week with no walks. Once they're out of strays, they still often don't get walks because staff don't have time and there aren't enough volunteers. Animals sit in their waste all day because staff can't keep up. Animals get lost in the "system" (some kittens, forgotten in a back room, recently died there from neglect), and animal care staff, most of who are devoted to the animals, are seriously overworked and underpaid. They have no professional trainers and don't train dogs or work on behavior issues. The percentage of animals that make it out alive is only in the 60% range. They're better than they were before in their old place (basically a killing machine) but have a looong way to go to become a HUMANE shelter -- for the workers and the animals.

Lies Lies Lies this is the only thing they do I've went there time and time again...... The ppl who work there need to be thrown on the street.... And have real ppl who care and act like they care about there animals.... They don't even call if something happens to an animal you want to adopt.... Even if you have the papers filled out!

You can't judge one bad experience from all the great work these dedicated people do for abused and neglected, homeless animals. It is a thankless, dirty job that no one wants. I admire these people in this field of service that dedicate themselves tirelessly to working with homeless, and abused animals. My heart goes out to all these animals that are given to the shelters that people decide they can't or don't wish to keep anymore. To all the staff, please keep up the great work of giving these poor animals a second chance at life by finding them deserving homes and for the stringent rules and guidelines that others have to follow in adopting an animal.

very good

This is an excellent "pound" run by caring, knowledgeable folks. Take their advice about selecting an animal. We have and have been pleased, time after time. The facility is clean, the animals healthy and well-cared for.
