Business History
Myrl R. Crane started in the trades in 1906 in San Francisco California after the earthquake and fire of 1906. By 1914 he was doing public works including 22 schools. His son, Frank M. Crane, was a graduate civil engineer and became a contractor himself and bought out his fathers firm.In 1960 Frank and his son Douglas incorporated Crane of Ukiah Inc and transitioned from public works to negotiated private work as the primary focus of the business. It was about this time that Doug became interested in manufactured metal buildings. Having grown up on the various school projects and having seen the quality of the lumber decline he saw manufactured metal buildings as the future of low rise commercial, industrial and private shop construction. Over the years this has proved to be correct. Frank was involved in the company until his death in 2002 which is the same year that Doug's son Eric began working for Crane of Ukiah.
