DETECTABLE WARNINGS (also know as TRUNCATED DOMES) Detectable Warnings are an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirement in the current Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) for the use of detecting the boundary line between the sidewalk and the street. In response to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) curb ramps became a requirement on sidewalks where pedestrians are to cross the street. The emergence of curb ramps created another problem, it removed the “step off” from the curb at the end of the sidewalk. Which made it more difficult for blind and visually impaired pedestrians to determine the separation point between the street and sidewalk. The solution to this problem is the detectable warning also known as truncated domes, which is now required by ADA laws.
