Located in Hernando County, Spring Hill had a population estimated at more than 92,000 as of 2006. One of the distinctive features of Spring Hill is the presence of a waterfall that's accessible by the community. Nestled between Hernando Beach to the west, Tampa/St. Petersburg to the south and Brooksville to the east, Spring Hill residents enjoy the benefits of both a small town and a large metropolitan area.

While Spring Hill has developed the look and feel of a city, the community remains largely unincorporated. As with many communities of this type, Spring Hill looks to the county for governance. The community is considered part of Florida's Nature Coast and is easily accessible from both Tampa and St. Petersburg.


Spring Hill enjoyed significant growth between 2000 and 2005. An estimated net increase of nearly 20,000 residents meant an increase in population of 23 percent for the community; this led to a housing boom in the area, which has provided additional employment opportunities, as well as new residences of all types.

While still largely unincorporated, Spring Hill has developed an economy largely based on the presence of retail chains within the community. Along with retail, the healthcare industry also provides significant employment opportunities in the area.

Two hospitals located in Spring Hill serve the healthcare needs of the citizens of Spring Hill. A third hospital is located in nearby Brooksville.

Spring Hill is home to a campus of Pasco-Hernando Community College, known as the Spring Hill Center. This satellite campus offers college courses during the day as well as adult education programs in the evening. Plans to expand the campus and the courses offered were announced in 2007.

  • The Nature Coast Botanical Gardens are located in Spring Hill and offer several acres of beautifully cultivated flora and fauna.
  • Weeki Wachee Springs is renowned for its live mermaid show and features a spring-fed water park, Buccaneer Bay, that is open for most of the year. The park also features a wide range of shopping and recreational activities, including boating and swimming.
  • The Stage West Community Playhouse is the longest-running, live theater in the County, and the theater season routinely includes both classics and original productions.
  • The Hernando Symphony Orchestra offers performances throughout the year. Composed entirely of volunteers, the orchestra offers musical selections from several different genres.
  • Cedar Key Museum State Park includes a museum housed in the historic residence of Saint Clair Whitman, who established the first museum in the area. The park also includes walking trails and picnic areas.
  • The Hernando Heritage Museum in nearby Brooksville has more than 10,000 artifacts on display dating back to the Civil War era. The museum is housed in an antebellum mansion that was built in 1856.
