I saw this sleep doctor upon referral from my general practitioner. Immediately upon sitting down with the doctor, I stated I would not be interested in a full sleep study as I had had one two years prior. We talked about my medical history and a few issues that could cause my tiredness. The doctor thought a sleep journal might provide some answers.

I remember this visit to have taken no longer than 10 minutes before the doctor was through with me. Those ten minutes were charged to my insurance company as a 'professional consultation' at a cost of $325.00. $325.00 for 10 minutes and the suggestion of a sleep journal?

It took eight phone calls and eight messages with the doctor's service, (the office workers do not answer the phones for questions, anytime during the day) before someone phoned back. I wanted to see the notes from this 10-minute appointment, maybe there was a reason for the ludicrous charge?

Four months later, I finally received the notes. In my opinion, I was completely overcharged. I believe my age, I am 23, was one of the reasons for the inflated description of my visit. That and the receptionists' statement when I finally did speak with a person, what does it matter "your insurance will pay for it". Even an office visit would be an overstatement for the 10 minutes I had the doctor’s attention.

This appointment lasted a total of maybe 10 minutes, I have spent hours trying to get in touch with this office and University Hospital just to obtain my medical records, and then months trying to get the paperwork I wanted to see prior to paying this bill. Maybe the office likes being difficult to reach, did I mention the claim ‘automatically' went to collections after four months?

I've paid the bill in full. What an awful experience, start to finish.
