The California Department of Transportation governs the Division of Maintenance, which owns and manages more than 15,200 centerline miles of highway, as well as inspects over 12,000 local bridges. The California Department of Transportation also permits over 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports. The department is governed by the State of California.
