Shan McNaughton, AIA is a licensed architect in the state of California. He has over 18 years of professional experience in the field of architecture, with over 10 years as owner of his own firms.  His portfolio ranges from rehabilitation, adaptive reuse and historic preservation projects to professional offices, retail, and custom residential architecture.   McNaughton's career is founded on rigorous university training coupled with a pragmatic, hands-on approach to design, engineering and construction.  He completed his final year of university in Florence, Italy and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, South America, and Asia. McNaughton recognizes that ecological sustainability is the new design imperative for the 21st century.  His projects put the principles of ecological design into practice.  Passive and active solar design, energy and resource efficiency, and the utilization of earth friendly materials are core principles upon which his designs are founded.   McNaughton designed and built his own house which has been published twice in Inland Empire Magazine for its innovative design and integration of sustainable materials and technologies.  He has recently completed an extensive rehabilitation, addition and preservation project on his historic residence in Redlands.  The rehabilitation and addition is historic and ecological at the same time.   In addition to ecological design, McNaughton also has a special interest in structural design.  His projects reflect a sound integration of structural systems and their purposeful expression within the overall architecture.  He presently provides the structural design and engineering calculations for most of the projects designed by Armantrout Architects and AC6 Architects.
