Highlands Regional Medical Center is a 184 bed, nonprofit, community owned and operated healthcare facility serving the communities of the Big Sandy Area in Kentucky. Highlands immediate service area is Floyd, Johnson, Martin and Magoffin counties with a combined population of more than 90,000 residents. In addition, people from more than ten surrounding counties come to Highlands to take advantage of the wide variety of specialty medical services available at Highlands and in Highlands Clinic. Services available through the hospital include family care, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, orthopedics, urology and otolaryngology, among others. Highlands also offers free community health education programs on topics such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and others. Highlands was founded in 1963 by a group of concerned citizens from each of the four counties who, working together in a collaborative effort, established a regional medical center to provide high quality healthcare services to people living in the hospital s rural area.
