Based in Ponca City, Okla., the American Legion Children's Home is a child welfare center. It enrolls children with learning disabilities and emotional disturbances, offering classes in training for basic living, such as, cleanliness, hygiene, social skills, food planning, household shopping, community awareness, etiquette and safety drills, along with recreational therapy with ports, dances, swimming, fishing and camping events. The center has an adjunct campus to the public school system, where the children are mainstreamed off as soon as their conditions allow. It also offers an independent living program for children of 16 years and older.
