My son is 11 years old and started the sixth grade last week at Glades Middle School. He has been going to sunshine aftercare and summer camps for the past three years. The care was adequate. I am a single mom and work no less than 60 hours per week. My son's safety is always top priority to me.
He attended sunshine aftercare at glades last week. On 8/28/17 I was reminded that he was not registered and would need to be. We agreed that I would register him the next day, as I had a significant time crunch and wouldn't be able to do the paperwork at the time.
I went to pick up my son from aftercare on 8/29/17, prepared to register him as we agreed. THEY WOULD NOT ALLOW MY SON TO STAY IN THE PROGRAM, AND THEY SIMPLY TOLD HIM THAT HE HAD TO LEAVE. They did not ensure his safety, they made no attempt to contact me as his parent. They simply told him he had to leave. My son wandered around the empty school parking lot for about 30 minutes. He called a friend, and walked to the friend's house, about 3 miles from the school on a busy highway. He is 11.
I contacted Colleen, the person I understand to be the director of sunshine. She made no apologies, showed no concern for my son's health. She informed me they followed protocol by kicking an 11 year old minor out of an aftercare program that he had been attending for 3 years because I did not complete the registration (meaning I had not paid for the week). I came fully prepared to register him on the day that he was kicked out
IS THIS THE KIND OF CARE YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILD? SHOULD THIS ORGANIZATION EVEN BE LOCATED AT YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL? WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE DECISION TO KICK MY SON OUT OF THE SCHOOL? WHAT IF THIS WAS YOUR CHILD?
