I like going to Lorraine Fabrics. If you are looking for a lot of hand holding and intimate customer service, this is not your place. BUT if you are looking for great fabrics and love to browse, this place is for you. Most of the people who go there are people with experience in sewing. If you go there with that attitude, you will find people helpful. If you go there with a whiny, 'I need someone to guide me every step of the way' thinking...you will be ignored. Great store, been around for a long time. It's an experience!

This is an old factory building filled with a huge inventory of all kinds of fabrics. The entire second floor is priced at $1.99/yard. They definitely have something for everyone. You won't find the latest quilting fabrics; this isn't a quilt shop, but it's a great source for backing fabric. I always find some treasures here.

Yesterday the two young women who cut my fabrics were nice as can be. The crabbiest employee is now gone I hear. Still, don't be there close to closing time. Haha, they're very serious about that.

More expensive But better quality

I love going to Lorraine's. Yes it is seemly more expensive but the fabric sold there is of better quality than a store like Joannes. They sell chaffinch, charmeuse, jersey, organza, wools... Since these fabrics are natural fibers, it is expected that you pay more. They also have an amazing selection of trims that I have not been able to find anywhere else in RI. If you are looking for cheaper fabric, they do have an upstairs where everything is $1.99 a yard. They also have a large selection of upholstery fabrics.

I've always been really happy with what I've got there; I was able to get a twill houndstooth, 100% wool fabric for a winter coat for $10 a yard (60" wide) and 60" silk charmeuse for $13 a yard.

great fabrics

The fabric is great. You can find alot of out of the ordinary fabrics that you don't see. I wish they would have a sale. I don't go out of my way to go there because of that. I go where it is coupon friendly. I would like to see them stay in business but they are closed minded. Have a sale!

lots of unique fabrics.

They do have a large selection of fabrics to choose from. I really wish they would have coupons like Joann fabrics. It would give an opportunity for new customers to stop in. 50% off coupons would be great. Customers always buy other things to go along with the fabric. Maybe they don't need new business?

The second floor has some good bargins on fabrics, but beware, I bought some white fabric and the minute I sewed it, it ripped. It was shop worn. I threw the whole piece away.
