The National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, is one of the largest organizations in the United States that provides a range of support services for individuals with mental illnesses. Founded in 1979, it offers support, education and advocacy through various activities and programs. The organization administers several educational programs that include information and skills related to mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness maintains affiliates in more than 1,100 local communities throughout the U.S. It operates the Multicultural Action Center, which provides access to various services and treatment that support families dealing with mental illness. The organization also publishes a quarterly magazine, The Advocate. Additionally, the National Alliance on Mental Illness operates a store that sells a variety of program materials, books, brochures, posters, videos and specialty items.
