Formed in 1857, Marine Resources Commission is one of the oldest fishing agencies in Virginia. Based in Newport News, Va., the commission provides a series of services in recreational fishing, commercial fishing, law enforcement and habitat management. The group operates though several divisions, such as fisheries management, habitat management, law enforcement and administration/finance. It manages the state's submerged bottom lands, tidal wetlands, sand dunes and beaches in order to preserve and protect Virginia's natural resources.
