I am a professional musician, have been dealing with repairman for 30 years, and the work done on an instrument I brought to Karl was the worst repair job I have ever experienced.
I brought in a classical guitar, that played quite well except for some buzzing on 3 frets. Karl called me and left a very lengthy message, singing his praises of his knowledge, informed me he knew exactly what was wrong with it and could fix it for $150. After two days he told me the job was done, played great and I could pick it up.
I tried the guitar in the shop, now its buzzing all over the place. I mentioned to Kim (who is very nice), the guitar is still buzzing. She went to get Karl, but he did not speak to me, instead he had Kim tell me that there was problems with the neck, and that he could fix that for $800. Im amazed, the guitar was nice with a few small problems and after Karl worked on it, its an absolute disaster!
I have sent instruments to repairman, who tell me what the problem is, discover a new problem while working on it. They ALL call me to tell me of the newly discovered issue, give me an estimate, ask me if I want to have the new work AND THE ORIGINAL work done if it is necessary after discovering the new issue. Not Karl! He says the guitar is great, and only after complaining did he mention this other issue. I guess he figured I wouldnt notice.
I went back a few days later and was able to speak to Karl. I informed him that now the buzzing is worse, occurring all over the guitar, played it for him, and he told me that was impossible, proceded to explain the laws of physics to me. I dont care about physics, USE YOUR EARS AND LISTEN TO IT! I tried to explain to him that he really should have let me know before doing the work that he found a new problem. But at the end of the day the neck is fine (took it to a REAL classical luthier, he just did a very poor fret redressing. So not only did I get ripped off $150 because he didnt fix the problem, HE RUINED MY GUITAR. The luthier told me I have to now have the frets replaced, which will cost $400-500 dollars.
Carl charges professional prices, but you get abysmal. Stay clear of this charlatan.
