Elizabeth Rose Chacon is a Certified Autism Movement Therapy® Provider for students who are on the moderate to severe side of the Autism Spectrum or have special needs that prevent them from participating in "typical" dance classes. As the weeks go on, every attempt to dance or mimic movement is celebrated. In the process their brains are stimulated and challenged by the movement. Due to neuroplasticity* (or neural plasticity) new neural pathways are created, these pathways encourage communication between the left and right hemisphere of the brain. For students who have communication issues, this cognitive "re-mapping" connects the hemispheres and this connection can help improve speech and communication. In A Dance Class For Me! some behaviors are not considered maladaptive and are not corrected. Those behaviors are talking, yelling, flapping, spinning, running, jumping, anything a student does to help his or her brain calm itself. Maladaptive behaviors that are addressed and stopped are hitting other students, the instructor, the wall, or the mirror. If you have questions regarding your student's behavior, please feel free to ask Elizabeth Chacon what can be done for the benefit of your student. Elizabeth is also a Board Certified Autism Technician (BCAT), if you have ABA goals in your child/student's ABA or IEP plan, Elizabeth can help.
