Middle Tennessee Electric Membership is a nonprofit cooperative electric distribution system that provides electricity to more than 160,000 residential and business members in a four-county area directly south of metropolitan Nashville. Each of its members maintains part ownership. Formed by farmers and homeowners in 1936, it has grown to become the state's largest electric cooperative and the sixth largest in the United States. Middle Tennessee Electric Membership s corporate headquarters is in Murfreesboro. It has branch offices in Franklin, Lebanon, Smyrna, and Woodbury, Tenn.

It is an absolute joke that you have to notify MTEMC that you do not want to participate in operation round-up and ask for your money to be reimbursed. The default should be that you ask to be in operation round-up. MTEMC charges its customers crazy fees for everything and then they think it is a good idea to take even more from you for this ill conceived program. Two more complaints. I paid $50 for a meter inspection for my new construction temporary service. I was there and saw the guy do the inspection, it only took him 1 second and he drove across my grass and tore down my gravel drive so fast he launched rocks into the air. Lastly, when you call MTEMC the ladies who answer the phone are not helpful and rude.

MTEMC charged me $40 to hang a notice on my door telling me they would turn off my power when my bill was only 19 days late. I don't need a notice telling me that my bill is late. I haven't paid it! I know it's late! I got all the voice messages telling me I was late too. They already charged me a late fee. And if I don't pay this ridiculous fee, they will turn off my power. That's extortion! I think it's ridiculous to threaten to turn someone's power off for a bill that is 19 days late. 49 days late...maybe, but 19? Come on! I am disgusted with this company. They say they are MY company. I would never allow them to do that if it were MY company.

This place offers TERRIBLE service. The people who answer the phones are rude, they only allow a single name on an account so if a spouse calls in they refuse to talk them, and their "paperless billing" never comes to my email account. The snarky woman answering the phone told me that I needed to "check my spam account" but that was after she INSISTED that I was receiving a paper bill. She was so insistent that I should check with the postal carrier then changed her tune when she probed a bit further and realized that we were on paperless billing. When are we going to stand up and refuse to be treated this way with a monopolized service such as this?!?! They know we have no other choice in electric service so that gives them carte blanche to behave in any way they'd like.

I'm sorry for what you've described as your experience. Please contact me, and let's talk and see if we can make things better. It may be true that MTEMC is a monopoly...but it is YOUR monopoly. It is owned by the members it serves...like you. Sincerely, Chris Jones MTEMC
