OMG.... Really?

BEWARE: I called to have annual maintenance performed on the AC system at our newly purchased home (built in ‘90s with original unit). To give credit were due, they promised to arrive at 7:30 and a technician was in my drive-way at 7:35, pretty good. Upon arrival, the technician asked what they could do. He was advised we were looking to have “standard maintenance” performed (note to self: next time make sure you have the manufacturer’s service manual handy!). Here is a run-down of the next 35 minutes.I started by showing the technician to the indoor location of the air-handler and evaporator coil.Technician: What’s this (DING DING DING – Hello, where’s my internal alarm bell!)Response: Well, I think it might need to be cleaned. It started putting off a lot of water last week and I had to fix the drain because it was knocked loose by the guys who replaced the hot-water tank a few months ago. It seems to be draining fine now, but I noticed the coils freezing up pretty quickly after it kicking on while I was testing the drainage.Technician: Sounds like its low on refrigerant. Do you replace your air filters?Response: Yes, I use the 3M pleated filters and replace them every 2-3 months.Technician: That sounds good, where’s the outside unit.Response: This way….. Here it is.Technician: Okay, can you turn it on and I will test the levelsResponse: okay… (went inside and turned on the AC)Doo doo doo du do doo doo doo…. 12 min laterTechnician: Knock… Knock… It was two pounds low on refrigerant.Response: I think it was serviced as part of the inspection a few months ago, is it normal to be that low?Technician: Know, it was likely leaking somewhere. I replaced the service caps and tightened a few things. You should be good to go.Response: ooookaaay….. how much do I owe you?Technician: That will be $240Response: uhhh… really… that’s more than I was expecting.Technician: Well, your unit is kind of old, I would not put any more money into it. If you want to replace it we’ll take the $240 off the top.Needless to say, at this point I sent the man on his way. Unfortunately I was dumb enough to write a check. Looked up service from a well-known competitor… $89 for standard maintenance which includes things like:Cleaning coils & condenser, Testing Air-flow, replacing filters, checking voltage, up to one pound of refrigerant, etc. etc. Hope this helps someone make a better decision than I did… call someone else!FYI... I tried calling before posting reviews and the response was essentially, "Refrigerant is expensive" and "you did not tell us what you wanted done". Ah hum... correct. I don't represent myself to be a professional AC repair company... Like I said. Next time I guess I should have a copy of the service manual for the technician.
