Established in 1924, the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, also known as PWCC, provides a variety of services for families and individuals. The center serves more than 1,000 residents of Minnesota every year. It operates a youth development services division that supports an academic achievement program to assist students in grades kindergarten through nine. This division also operates the Mary T. Wellcome Child Development Center, which is a licensed nonprofit child care center. In addition, the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center operates a family support services division that provides community-based counseling and advocacy services for predominately African-American men, women and children. This division additionally supports the Northside Family Initiative, which is a program that assists low-income families in accomplishing economic independence. The center maintains a senior support services division, as well as offers several volunteer services. It maintains a location in Minneapolis.
