Miguel A. Medina III, M.D., is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon and director of microsurgery at Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. Dr. Medina specializes in complex reconstruction and microsurgery, utilizing specialized operating microscopes and precision instrumentation to perform intricate procedures such as the reconnection of nerves, muscles and blood vessels. He focuses on restoring physical function and appearance as well as confidence and dignity after the surgical treatment of cancer.Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Medina’s clinical focus includes abdominal wall reconstruction, breast reconstructive surgery including DIEP flap reconstruction, craniofacial reconstruction and head and neck reconstructive surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C. He completed a surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass., receiving the V.H. Kazanjian Research Fellowship in reconstructive surgery. He also completed a plastic surgery residency in the Harvard Plastic Surgery Program at Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident. He continued his postdoctoral training with a fellowship in craniofacial surgery and microsurgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital/R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md. Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute, Dr. Medina specialized in craniofacial and reconstructive microsurgery at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Fla. He is an innovator in his field, with numerous invited national and international presentations, instructional courses and lectures. He also is a distinguished clinical educator, serving as clinical assistant professor of surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Medina has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and serves as a reviewer for three scientific journals, including the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
