Steve Williams was born and raised on a ranch in Southwest Colorado. After graduating from high school he entered the construction industry, becoming a heavy equipment operator. After fifteen years in this field, Steve was ready for a change. He had always enjoyed working with metal and the blacksmithing field seemed a good fit. Steve completed Frank Turley's basic blacksmithing course in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he learned traditional smithing techniques using the forge and anvil. He went on to apprentice with Mike Boone of Boone Wrought Iron in Dolores, Colorado where he worked for two years and then moved on to apprentice with Rod Pickett at Forging Ahead in Durango, Colorado where he smithed for an additional four years. During this six year apprenticeship Steve was building his shop and developing his own style of blacksmithing. In January of 2002, he opened the Cowboy Forge Blacksmith Shop at his home in Mancos, Colorado. He soon outgrew this shop and moved to a larger shop south of Cortez. His shop continues to be a one-man shop utilizing blacksmithing tools he has acquired and forged since entering the field of ornamental ironwork. Steve began creating hand-forged household furnishings and has added custom railings, entry gates, memorials and fireplace screens. Recently he has entered the field of historical restorations, completing a fence around the city park in Georgetown, Colorado. Contact Steve for your custom ironwork needs.
