Romantic Ideas for a Honeymoon Cruise
Cruises offer many amenities to make the most of your experience
By Sandy Mitchell
A cruise can be an ideal choice for a honeymoon. One price includes most components of your trip, there's no unpacking and repacking needed to visit multiple destinations, and land-based resorts rarely match the level of service on most cruise lines. A cruise is also a very romantic way to spend your honeymoon. There are secluded beaches to explore during the day, the upper deck on which to stroll in the evening and private verandas in some staterooms where you can sip your morning coffee together.
Choose a Veranda
Most cruise ships built after 1990 include staterooms with their own private balconies, generally called verandas at sea. Some lines equip up to 60 percent of their accommodations with this feature and these rooms are usually the first ones to be booked. A cruise veranda is a romantic place to start the day or to unwind after a full day of sightseeing. You can even prop open the door at night and go to sleep to the sound of the waves lapping against the side of the ship.
Sample the Spa
Most medium to large-size cruise lines offer an onboard spa. These pampering palaces offer a wide range of beauty and health services, including hairstyling and nail treatments, facials and massages, and full-scale nutritional and healthy lifestyle consultations.
Order a Honeymoon Package
Cruise lines generally offer some type of honeymoon package. These frequently include such things as a bottle of champagne, breakfast served in your stateroom, plush robes and a keepsake photograph or gift. Book this yourself when you make your cruise reservation or suggest it as a gift from your family and friends. You should consult a travel agent when booking your honeymoon because they often have special relationships with cruise lines and can maximize your honeymoon experience.
Dine in the Reservations-Only Restaurant
An increasing number of cruise lines are offering small, intimate dining rooms as an alternative to the large main dining room. These restaurants offer quiet tables for two and food options that are impossible when cooking for hundreds of diners. These small restaurants usually carry a supplemental fee and reservations are required.
Book Intimate Excursions
Cruise lines offer a variety of activities and day trips that are great ways to enjoy and explore your port destinations. While many activities are adventurous (such as rock-climbing or skydiving), others are relaxed and beautiful (such as catamaran tours or snorkeling trips). Look for excursions that will enhance your honeymoon experience. Look for experiences -- such as swimming with sea turtles or touring waterfalls -- that will make for great honeymoon photos and create lasting memories.
