Proper Wedding Attire for a Saturday Night Wedding

A bolder look is appropriate, but keep it tasteful and fashionable

A Saturday night wedding will usually have a dressed-up feel. The invite may not indicate black tie, especially if the reception is held at someone's home or at a restaurant, but it's respectful to wear appropriate clothing that you would wear to any fashionable event on a Saturday night. Women should keep makeup and accessories tasteful, but don't be afraid to make bolder choices than you would for a morning or afternoon ceremony.

Men should wear a dark suit for any evening wedding, Saturday nights included. The suit does not have to be black. Navy and darker shades of gray are good choices. Dark socks and dress shoes should be worn.

Cocktail Dresses

A cocktail dress is an appropriate look for a woman for a Saturday night wedding. Dark colors, including black, are acceptable. Though it's a Saturday night, it's still a wedding, so remember to keep the hemline appropriate (just above the knee at the shortest) and cleavage to a minimum.

A dressy pantsuit is appropriate for a mature woman who may not feel comfortable in a dress. Look for rich details such as brocade, satin and rhinestones, which will make the pantsuit appropriate for the evening.

Evening Gowns

An evening gown should not be worn unless the wedding invitation reads black tie. Some evening gowns are simply too dressy for cocktail events, and you run the risk of upstaging the bride, depending on how ornate the evening gown is.

Women should wear heels. Mature women can wear a low, thick heel, which will be easier on their feet, or a fashionable loafer in patent leather.

Planning Reminder:

All tuxed out

The groom may not require the same attire preparation as the bride, but he still needs to be dressed and ready for the big day. Assign the task of picking up the tux if it's one extra thing too many. Pick someone reliable and who won't wait until the shop is nearly closed to grab the wedding day wear.
