How Much Do You Tip a Limousine Driver?
Don't assume your wedding limo driver gets the gratuity that's on your bill
By Linda Ray
Tipping is a personal expression of gratitude for service that goes above and beyond expectations. While a tip may be included in the contract price for the limousines used during the wedding day, couples should consider additional monetary gratuities for exceptional service.
Those who know they will be requesting special services can slip the limo driver anywhere from $20 to $100 before he even starts driving. Additional requests might include making extra stops between the church and the reception hall or playing specific songs during the ride.
The traditional tip for limousine drivers is 15 percent if the tip was not included in the bill, 20 percent if the driver was exceptional.
Couples should read the contract before extending this gratuity and inquire whether the driver receives the tip that was paid to the limo company.
The wedding couple should convey the terms of the contract with anyone who offers to pay for the limo. The person who pays for the ride should also tip the driver either before or after the period of service.
Most limo companies do not turn over the full amount of the tip paid in the contract to the drivers. Limo drivers rely heavily on tips given directly to them to pay their bills.
When a hotel or catering service provides a limousine free, the driver still needs to be tipped the traditional 15 to 20 percent.
