How to Dress for a Vow Renewal Ceremony
Set the tone for this ceremony based on what you want
By Samantha Cabrera
Renewing your vows is a special event that allows you relive your wedding exactly as you see fit. There are no rules on dress for vow renewal ceremonies, as long as the "bride" and "groom" are comfortable. In fact, these ceremonies can be quaint with just a few guests and a backyard BBQ or as large as wedding reception with events held at hotel or other larger venues.
- What You Need to Know
- The level of formality for a renewal ceremony is determined by the couple.
- Renewal ceremonies don't require as much advance preparation as a wedding ceremony, but should still feel special.
Dress in sync with the ambience of your renewal ceremony. Once you have chosen the season and venue for your ceremony, choosing an outfit becomes easier. A spring vow renewal ceremony at a local botanical garden, for example, might call for a lightweight suit for the man and a pastel dress for the woman. A ceremony in winter, held at a large hotel, might call for a dark suit for the man and a cocktail dress or evening gown for the woman.
Dress up a notch. While it isn't imperative that you be formally dressed for a renewal ceremony, wearing a suit or evening gown while the rest of your guests are in cocktail attire is common if the event is held in the evening. It's your ceremony, and you will be the center of attention, so don't be afraid of to wear a suit and tie or go floor length with your dress.
Choose what works. There aren't many rules for what to wear to a vow renewal ceremony. If you cringe at the thought of a big, white gown but were pushed into it by your mother and bridesmaids, this is your chance to wear what you want to wear. Anything goes, even black, as long as it's in tune with the mood or atmosphere of your ceremony. But do keep the neckline tasteful and the hemline no shorter than just above your knees.
