Handcrafting a Flower Girl Basket
Make a pretty keepsake your flower girl will treasure.
By Cynthia Myers
A flower girl basket is one of the easiest crafts to make for your wedding. The materials are inexpensive and available at most craft stores. You can create a charming basket that matches your wedding decor, and the basket will be a lovely keepsake for the flower girl to take home after the wedding. Fill the basket with fresh or silk flowers, or with rose petals for the flower girl to scatter as she walks down the aisle.
- What You Need to Know
- Silk or real rose petals
- ½ yard of satin, cotton, organdy or any lightweight fabric
- Basket with handle
- 2 yards of 2-inch-wide satin ribbon
- Glue gun
- Scissors
- Wire cutters
- Florist wire
- Silk flowers
- 2 yards of 1/8-inch-wide satin ribbon
Step 1:
Wrap the 2-inch-wide satin ribbon around the widest part of the basket. Tie it in a bow. Anchor the ribbon with a couple of dots of hot glue. Trim the ends of the ribbon to make them the same length.
Step 2:
Trim the stems of the silk flowers with wire cutters to about 1 inch. Using florist wire, attach the flowers to the handle of the basket. Bunch the flowers on each side of the base of the handle, like a corsage.
Step 3:
Cut the 1/8-inch-wide ribbon in half and tie each half in a bow on either side of the handle just above the flowers.
Step 4:
Cut the fabric to fit inside the basket. You can round the edges or leave them square. Anchor the fabric in the basket with a couple of dots of hot glue on the bottom and the sides.
Step 5:
Fill the completed basket with rose petals.
- Tips & Warnings
- Instead of a basket, you can use a small metal pail.
- Hot glue guns can cause severe burns. Use caution when handling them.
