Gift Ideas for Engagement Parties
Consider these simple gifts for the happy couple
By Debby Mayne
Engagement parties are a celebration to officially announce the couple's new status. Gifts are not necessary, but most guests will want to bring something. With impending gift-giving opportunities, such as bridal showers and the wedding itself, keep your gift simple yet meaningful. If the couple enjoys a laugh, a humorous present is fine as long as it is tasteful and fitting for others on the guest list to see.
A basket of food you know they'll enjoy makes for a nice engagement gift. Fill it with picnic items, chocolates, champagne, or cheese and crackers. The beauty of this gift is that you can spend as much or as little as you wish, though it's probably a good idea not to pack M&Ms and other very cheap items in a gift basket of this kind.
Personalized or matching items
Most couples appreciate knowing you went to the trouble of having something personalized. Mugs, mouse pads, framed pictures of them or aprons are items that are easy to have personalized with pictures of the couple, their names and the date they met.
Make or buy a pretty scrapbook and fill it with pictures, ticket stubs, restaurant menus and anything else you can find that will remind them of their dates and happy memories. Include a story or poem about how they fell in love and decided to get married to make it even more special. Leave room at the end to add comments from engagement party guests.
A box or basket of books about anything from tips on being happily married to novels by their favorite authors will be appreciated. Add monogrammed or engraved bookmarks, book covers and reading lights to make this gift even more special.
Find out what music both of them like and get them music by their favorite artists. Add scented candles and candle holders for that extra romantic touch. To take it to an even higher level, include a book of romantic poetry for them to read to each other. Supplement with other activity-based gifts such as certificates to fine dining establishments, or cultural events like the ballet or opera if they appreciate performance art.
For the couple that enjoys laughing together, fill a basket with romantic comedy DVDs and popcorn for a night of love and laughter. Add matching T-shirts with funny sayings and a book of jokes.
