Engagement Party Ideas & Themes
Enhance your party with a festive and lively motif
By Cynthia Myers
An engagement party celebrates the couple and allows family and friends from both families to get to know each other better. This first party that focuses on the future bride and groom may be informal or fancy. Guests may know about the engagement ahead of time, or this may be the venue where the couple or one of their parents announces the happy news.
Do the Decades
Celebrate the decade in which you were born. Invites guests to wear clothes reminiscent of the sixties, seventies, eighties or whatever other decade the bride and groom were born in. Play music from the decade, or have karaoke and invite guests to sing the hits of the decade. Have couples or family members compete in teams to see who can answer the most trivia questions about the decade.
Engagement parties are traditionally an opportunity for members of the bride and groom's extended families to get to know each other better. A casual event such as a backyard barbecue helps people relax and warm up to each other. Relay races and any games where couples have to work together, such as sack races, can reinforce the togetherness theme.
Invite friends and family to celebrate the happy news and toast the engaged couple at a cocktail party. If the formal engagement announcement is to be made at the party, be sure to have champagne on hand for a congratulatory toast. Invite guests to play a newlywed game where couples, including the bride- and groom-to-be, reveal how much they really know about each other.
All About Love
The theme for this party is romance. Serve romantic foods such as strawberries and heart-shaped pastries. And don't forget chocolates. Invite guests to compete in performing karaoke versions of love songs. Or play trivia, questioning guests about famous romantic movies.
