Destination Weddings on a Cruise Ship
Getting married on a luxury liner is easy to plan and fun to experience
By Linda Ray
Cruise ship weddings allow couples to choose from a wide range of exotic wedding locations ranging from the Bahamas to Europe to Alaska. Wedding arrangements, transportation and guest accommodations can be made through a wedding planner or travel agent or by working directly with the cruise line's staff.
Laws and regulations
United States courts recognize marriages from other countries provided you have the proper paperwork. A wedding planner, travel agent or cruise representative can provide details about obtaining this paperwork and let you know what you need to do.
Costs
Weddings on cruise ships can range from $700 (for basic packages) and up, depending on how the services and amenities provided. In addition to wedding-related fees, wedding parties and their guests also must pay for the costs associated with the cruise.
Misconceptions
Most weddings that take place on cruise ships are performed when the ship is in port not at sea. Couples can choose to wed on the boat or at a location on shore.
Features
Wedding guests often join the couple for the entire cruise. Guests also may board the ship for the wedding or meet the couple in port for the occasion.
Benefits
One of the benefits of a cruise wedding is that the couple can combine the wedding with honeymoon.
Warning
Popular cruise ships book up as early as a year in advance. Consultants recommend that wedding parties wait no more than eight months in advance to make their reservations.

Planning Reminder:
Do the budget boogaloo
Figure out if one set of parents would like to cover, say, the rehearsal dinner, and another will foot the bill for the band, booze and food. You and your betrothed will need to cover the rest. Or, if you're covering the whole shebang, get ready for some finance finessing.
