What Color to Paint a Baby Nursery
Choose a calming color scheme for your new baby's room
By Tamara L. Waters
The choice of color for a baby's nursery can be a big decision for new parents. Color choices are usually based on the gender of the baby but can also be influenced by the desire for a calm and soothing room. Many parents choose to wait until the birth to find out the sex of the baby; these parents can still prepare a beautiful nursery using a gender-neutral color scheme.
Generally, blue is chosen for a boy, but it can also work for a girl. Pale blue with navy or white accents can be a good choice. Use pink and white accents for a girl's nursery.
Pink is usually associated with a baby girl. Choose varying shades of pink, from light rose to vibrant magenta. Add accent colors such as blue, green, yellow, lavender or white.
Yellow can be used in a neutral nursery, although it is best in a pale shade (bright yellow can cause overstimulation). Add blue or green trim for a masculine feel, or white or pink for a feminine room.
Green is another gender-neutral color. Add yellow for a neutral color scheme; pink or blue to create a gender-specific nursery.
While lavender might seem feminine, it can be effectively used as a neutral color. Combine lavender with a soft green for a boy or pink for a girl.
White is completely neutral. It can be accented with any color to create a nursery for either gender, and can serve as a base for wall murals.
