Hi, I'm John Galbraith, and today we're going to be talking about how to save money on home improvement projects. Now, there are definitely a few things you can do for yourself, but other aspects of remodeling your home, I highly recommend using a professional. One thing that just about anybody can do is tear out old cabinets, for instance. Let's say, if you are remodeling your kitchen, obviously the old cabinets are going to be coming out if that's the design that you've chosen. However, I recommend not to even touch those old cabinets until the new ones are on your property and the contractor has measured to make sure they're going to fit properly. Another thing you can do to spruce up your house and save money is paint, paint it yourself. You don't really need a professional painter just to paint walls. As long as you are using the right primer so that the paint doesn't peel off after you have painted it, you should be in good shape. To use the right primer, you simply have to go to the paint store and tell them what type of paint you have on the walls already, and he'll recommend the right primer to use before you apply your paint. Another thing you can do is look for tax incentives. For instance, if you're going to replace the toilet, the city will often give you $100 rebate for that toilet if you can show them proof that you have bought a new, low-consumption toilet, one that saves water. Getting a rebate from the city on your toilet is just one example. For a list of other appliances that can be switched out to more energy efficient appliances, just call 311 and they'll give you a list of products. I'm John Galbraith, and in this segment we have been talking about how to save money on home improvement projects.
