How to Find a Qualified Appliance Technician

Several factors can help identify the right technician

A good appliance technician can give your appliances the proper treatment they need -- and give you peace of mind. Some appliances simply can't be fixed using the D.I.Y methods offered by the manufacturer. Qualified appliance technicians can handle appliance repairs and upgrades on most name-brand appliances using specialized tools and equipment, and also order the right parts on your behalf. Whether you need a contractor to fix your dishwasher, washing machine, freezer or other home appliances, consider several factors before hiring a technician.

Step 1:

Turn to local home contractor organizations or builder's associations for referrals. These are great resources for finding qualified appliance technicians who professionals already work with.

Step 2:

Set up a consultation with at least three technicians. Request an in-home consultation so that the appliance technician can take a close look at the appliance and learn about the problems you are experiencing.

Step 3:

Find out if the appliance technician is certified. The Environmental Protection Agency requires all appliance technicians who work with refrigerants to be certified. Some certifications are voluntary; a qualified appliance technician may hold a National Appliance Service Technician Certification and the Certified Appliance Professional Certification, which certify that he or she has extensive experience and skills to provide services.

Step 4:

Ask for a project estimate. Determine the cost of appliance repair or service, and what types of parts must be ordered. Request a bid from each technician so you can select the most attractive price. The estimate should include a detailed list of all parts needed, labor, supplies and any other fees or taxes associated with the project.

Step 5:

Learn about any guarantees or warranty coverage available. Determine if the appliance technician's work is covered by a satisfaction guarantee, and what type of warranty period there may be on any new parts ordered. These extra benefits may help you make the most informed decision when comparing contractors.
