Tiles are often used for bathroom floors, walls and counters. Your bathroom tile can be anything but basic, since there is a plethora of tile designs available to complement every style. Mix and match the different types and colors of tiles to create an unusual design that will add character to your bathroom. Take inspiration from the different designs that you can create on your own.

Tile Murals

Create a tile mural and install it just as if you were putting together a puzzle. Choose a design that depicts a nature scene or other theme, and make it the focal point of your bathroom. Purchase tile mural kits from your local home improvement or specialty store, or commission a tile artist to create a custom design for you. If you have artistic talent, you can save a bundle by creating the mural painting on your own. Install tile murals on the shower or bathtub wall, or on the bathroom floor. A mural of ships sailing on a sea would be ideal for a nautical-themed bathroom. For a child's bathroom, use murals of sealife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles and sea horses, to give it a more playful appearance, providing the child with hours of bathtime enjoyment.

Tile Inserts

Use tiles of different materials as inserts. To add depth, leave empty slots or make cutouts for inserting specialty tiles, such as glass, metal or embossed tiles. Buy tiles with fossil-like designs and insert them between rows of complementary textured, tumbled marble tiles. The earthy tones of the tiles and the fossil-like designs can add textural interest to a plain bathroom wall. Mix and match tiles of different materials. Use glass tiles to border ceramic tiles or use them to create your backsplash.

Checkered, Herringbone or Diamond Pattern

Create a herringbone or diamond pattern instead of the usual squares, or create a checkered design by installing two different colors of tiles. Add instant visual appeal by installing tiles diagonally. Use a black and white checkered tile design to give a contemporary bathroom a masculine flavor. Install contrasting tiles in a harlequin pattern to create a classic ambience.

Mosaic Tiles

Create a beautiful collage of images in mosaic form. Using mosaic tiles to decorate your bathroom will enable you to recycle and reuse broken pieces of tiles instead of throwing them away. Salvage yards and tile manufacturers have discontinued or old tiles that you can use for your mosaic project. Opt for small pieces of glass tile that you can buy from craft or tile stores if you cannot find broken or old tiles. Mix different colors and textures to give your bathroom more visual impact.

Ceiling Tiles

Do not limit your tile decorations to the floors, walls and counters only. Add tiles to your bathroom ceilings to complement the ones you used for the floors and walls. Using blue-colored glass tiles all over in a shower stall can give you a sense that you are underwater, while earthy, darker and textured tiles can create a cave-like feeling. For a more dramatic effect, install your showerhead on your ceiling, which can simulate the effect of bathing in the rain.
