Tips for a clutter-free bathroom
By Kaye Morris
You can easily take the clutter and confusion out of your bathroom without a painful and expensive process. Far too often bathrooms become overrun with a vast array of items turning what is usually the smallest room in your home into an intimidating mess. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the challenge bathroom organization and storage presents, don't worry: Many companies provide efficient and inexpensive products that can increase your bathroom's storage space and eliminate clutter.
Over-the-toilet cabinets come in a wide variety of styles, materials and designs. Metal and wood storage cabinets are readily available and range in price from $30 to several hundred dollars. Before you choose a material or style, consider what you plan on storing in cabinets. This is especially important for metal cabinets because they usually consist of shelves made of metal runners. Small items can sit crooked or fall through runners if you're not careful. Wood cabinets, on the other hand, can have shelves and may include cabinet doors as well. Cabinet doors can be a blesing if you plan on storing items that you prefer visitors not see when using your bathroom. Wood cabinets come in many different types of wood, including unfinished cabinets, which you can either paint, stencil or decorate.
Shower caddies usually hang over the shower head piping and have two or more shelves. The shelves are great for storing shampoo, soap, razors, bath oil and other bathing items and free up space on your bathtub ledge. Shower caddies usually range in price from $10 to $50. Specialty shower caddies can be purchased with soap and shampoo dispensers, which can further reduce the number of bottles in your bathtub.
Towel bars and hooks
Towel bars usually come with a frame that fits over a shower door or an interior door. They have either bars for holding towels, individual hooks or both. They are great for hanging your towels, bathrobes and bath items with attachments for hanging such as shower brushes. A towel bar placed in the opening of a shower also serves as a place to hang a rug to dry so it won't drip on your floor. Towel bars usually range in price from $10 to $50.
There are a wide variety of under-the-counter storage containers made from metal and plastic. Bathroom cabinets often have two feet or more of clearance height but don't include shelves. Adding a cabinet storage item can give you two layers of storage in the same amount of space. If you keep bathroom cleaners or other liquids under your cabinet, place those items in a plastic container to prevent leaking. Counter storage items usually range in price from a couple of dollars to $100.
Toilet paper storage
Toilet paper stands consist of a single rod attached to a floor base and can hold one or several rolls of toilet paper depending on design. If you don't have the floor space for a toilet stand, choose a toilet roll holder that attaches over the side of the toilet tank and rests down the side of the tank. A tank roll holder usually holds a couple of rolls of toilet paper. Toilet paper storage items usually range in price from $10 to $50.
If you're fortunate enough to have a linen closet in your bathroom, store all your bathroom items in plastic containers. Use can use different colored containers to store different items such as hair products, medicine and bandages, or label the front of the containers according to the items stored in it. Storing your bathroom items in containers allows you to pull a single box of related items out of the closet to easily find what you need, rather than digging through many shelves of items.
