New or Used: 5 Auto Parts to Buy Used

Sooner or later, your vehicle is going to need some parts replaced. DexKnows auto parts listings is a great way to search for parts stores; but have you considered buying used auto parts? This isn’t always appropriate, so we’ll list some parts never to buy used and then tell you when used auto parts can be a good option.

Parts never to buy used

Car batteries, safety belts and airbag components should never be purchased used. There’s no way to know what use they’ve had and if they would actually work when you needed them.

“Used” versus “remanufactured” auto parts

Both of these terms describe auto parts that have been used, but there is an important difference between the two. Most often, parts sold as “used” have been taken from vehicles that were totaled. That means they may be the same age as the donor vehicle, so this is not a good option for parts that wear out. On the other hand, it can be an excellent way to buy other replacement auto body parts.

When an auto part is described as “remanufactured,” that means it’s been taken apart and rebuilt with new components replacing those that were worn. Typically, it is components such as bearings, bushings, seals and electrical brushes that wear out. Metal castings, on the other hand, tend to go on forever. Remanufactured parts are often just as good as new, but at a fraction of the cost.

Parts to buy remanufactured

Engines and engine auxiliaries such as the starter motor, alternators and power steering pump, plus brake calipers and cylinders, radiators and even air conditioning compressors can all be purchased as remanufactured.

Five auto parts to buy used

Used auto body parts are often a good buy, provided that they’re undamaged. The savings can be particularly good on foreign auto parts, which can carry a steep premium when new. You might also look for used parts such as sunroofs or certain performance auto parts. Five parts that are particularly popular to buy used are fenders, wheels, door mirrors, emblems and light clusters.

Where to buy used auto parts

Traditionally, buying used parts meant spending hours scouring auto salvage yards. Today, many auto dismantlers will do the removal for you. Alternatively, it’s perfectly feasible to ask your friendly auto body shop if they could get used parts for you. Use the DexKnows local listings to find a junk salvage yard, body shop or parts store near you and start saving money!
