The Social Service League is formed to promote the social welfare of Lawrence and surrounding Douglas County in cooperation with local benevolent and charitable organizations, by relieving the condition of needy individuals and families, to the end that they may sustain themselves. The Social Service League has a rich history dating back to 1863, making it Lawrence’s oldest charity. Currently the Social Service League serves as a direct needs program which operates from our thrift store in downtown Lawrence. Members of the community in need are referred to the Social Service League by other local service organizations to receive discounted or free goods from our thrift store. Examples of this include women who have escaped abusive relationships and are looking to start anew, families in need of clothing, shoes for growing children, and adults requiring clean, professional clothing for job interviews. The Social Service League also operates a Vision Program which, with the cooperation of local optometrists, provides free eye exams and eye glasses to both school children and adults. And runs a Prom Dress Room to administer formal wear at no cost to young adults.
