James Brown, MD, is a board-certified Pulmonary and Critical Care physician, seeing patients at our Grasslands Campus and at the Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. Having worked as a transplant pulmonologist, Dr. Brown has experience in treating patients with advanced lung diseases. How long have you worked in your field?I have experience in treating patients with advanced lung disease including those with rare interstitial lung diseases as well as complicated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. From a critical care standpoint, my areas of focus developed as a result of caring for this population in intensive care settings. What is your patient care philosophy?Genuine empathy is perhaps the most important tool we have as physicians for fostering meaningful relationships with patients and families. What would you like people to know about you as a physician?I receive a great deal of joy from teaching my patients and always encourage them to ask questions. Why did you decide to become a physician?Early in my education, I found medicine offered the perfect balance between my love of science and caring for people. What do you enjoy most about working with patients? In pulmonary medicine, people often come to our practice with unknown reasons for their shortness of breath. I enjoy moving through the processes of the workup, diagnosis and management alongside them as we develop the best care and treatment plan for them. When did you know you wanted to be a doctor?Deciding to go into medicine was a gradual process shaped by different experiences by the time I was 20 years old. How does your work improve lives?Helping patients breathe better opens up so many more ways to experience and enjoy life. For many people with pulmonary conditions, shortness of breath results in feelings of isolation and helplessness, and finding the right treatment can make a difference in their lives. What are some interesting facts about you?I majored in music with a focus on piano in college. With what community and volunteer organizations are you involved? We are new to the Tampa Bay area and look forward to joining some in the near future. Would you like to share about your family? My wife is also a physician at Lakeland Regional Health. We have two beautiful children and a dog in a very silly household. What childhood memory do you have about visiting the doctor?I grew up in a small town and was fortunate enough to know and to shadow several brilliant family physicians.
