Haylee Smith, APRN, is a certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and has been with Lakeland Regional Health since 2012. For her entire career, she has focused on women’s health and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Ms. Smith sees teenagers and women of all ages at our Obstetrics and Gynecologic practice at the Carol Jenkins Barnett Pavilion for Women and Children. Why did you choose Lakeland Regional Health? Lakeland Regional Health has helped me to build a great foundation for my career and has blessed me with many friends along the way. Lakeland Regional Health is truly home to me. How long have you worked in your field? The majority of my career has been focused on the childbearing-aged woman and obstetric care; however, I enjoy educating adolescents and college-aged women about their health and helping women who are on their perimenopausal journey moving toward their postmenopausal years. What is your patient care philosophy? A properly educated patient will be able to make informed decisions regarding their care and be a part of their medical treatment plan which will, in turn, mean better patient compliance, better patient satisfaction, better patient health, and hopefully create a bond between patient and provider. What would you like people to know about you as a care provider? I am available and happy to answer any and all questions my patients may have. I want my patients to leave their appointment feeling comfortable, heard, educated and empowered. Why did you decide to become a nurse practitioner? In high school, I knew I wanted to be a nurse in women’s health and became a labor and delivery nurse. During my time on the Labor and Delivery Unit, I decided I wanted to pursue a higher level of education so that I could provide quality healthcare for women like myself that is geared toward education in the office. What do you enjoy most about working with patients? I thoroughly enjoy educating patients, and I have found that with proper education, women are able to make informed decisions and play a role in their healthcare. When did you know you wanted to be a medical care provider? I knew that I was extremely interested in the medical field and women’s healthcare in middle school, and by high school I knew that women’s health was my calling. What are some interesting facts about you? I played on the high school golf team. I grew up playing piano, but hated practicing. I have a passion for mission work in other countries and have been to Guatemala on a mission trip. I would like my next mission trip to be a medical mission trip to help families in need of medical care. I have also hosted exchange students from France, Germany and Guatemala. With what community and volunteer organizations are you involved? In the past I’ve helped Dawning Family Services (formerly Alpha House of Tampa) by donating items of need to their program, which offers shelter and support services to homeless pregnant women and homeless single women with small children. In the future, I would like to become more involved in crisis pregnancy centers and battered women’s shelters. What are some of your hobbies? I absolutely LOVE to travel anywhere and everywhere! I also love to be at the beach or on a boat. I love cooking, RV camping, and taking photographs, although I am no professional. When I have time, I like doing arts and crafts.
